Insights and Innovations from InfoComm 2024

We’re Back and Stronger Than Ever!

InfoComm 2024 marked a significant milestone in the post-COVID era, with this being the most well-attended trade show we've experienced since the pandemic. While unsure of the exact attendance numbers, it was clear that the enthusiasm for trade shows is back in full swing.

The event not only showcased the latest releases in professional audio and video products but also offered a comprehensive education program with daily courses. However, one notable trend was the frequent use of the “AI” buzzword by many vendors. Despite their claims, we often felt that their offerings didn’t genuinely embody artificial intelligence.

Innovation was everywhere, with many new products and solutions from both well-known and emerging brands. Transparent LED displays, for example, are becoming more common, though their application in the church world remains to be seen.

Reconnecting with our long-standing partners and re-establishing relationships with past ones was a highlight. We also observed a growing adoption of SMPTE 2110 video over IP. However, its requirement for high-bandwidth infrastructure makes it a costly investment.

Motion tracking technology has now permeated mid-level PTZ cameras and is starting to appear in entry-level models, although the quality varies.

Cool Products and Practical Innovations - Our Take

L-Acoustics K-Array products are fantastic for installations that require a low visual footprint. Meyer Sound’s new point source, Ultra X80, delivers a powerful punch when paired with subs. It could be a great addition between Martin Audio CDD15s and L-Acoustics A15 systems.

The new Digital Audio Labs Livemix Pro system, set to arrive this fall, supports 64 audio channels instead of the previous 24 and features an improved visual interface. However, it’s not backward compatible, which is a downside.

L-Acoustics L-ISA systems are impressive, but their suitability for installation varies. They might be a great choice for large churches, but we would advise mid-sized and smaller churches to consider other options.

Novastar’s new MX processors appear promising and could lead over the VX line. Meanwhile, Allen & Heath’s D-Live processing sounds fantastic, with natural-sounding autotune and impressive dark reverbs. Upgrading to the new Rack Ultra FX Card is worth considering, especially if you aren’t already using a Waves setup.

Roland’s V-80HD is an excellent mid-range HDMI switcher with XLR inputs, built-in PTZ camera control, and a unique feature that allows Key/Fill from their dedicated software over a single HDMI cable.

Yamaha’s DM7 series of consoles are packed with features and have a smaller visual footprint than expected. The fader layouts differ from previous Yamaha designs, resembling Allen & Heath's approach. While the AI assist features might not benefit the church market much, the level assist features seem promising for live environments.

Sony’s new PTZ camera stood out with its natural “AI” tracking, despite some hiccups during complex demo scenarios. It felt the most natural in terms of tracking, losing the subject only twice.

The LEA Connect Series Touch is a potential solution for simple audio systems that require multiple audio level control knobs for different zones. In some installations, this could be more practical than using a dedicated DSP.

Hearing the L-Acoustics L2 and L2D was a remarkable experience. These compact speakers pack a mighty punch.

Lastly, it will be interesting to see how Martin Audio’s solution to the immersive room pans out—pun intended!

InfoComm 2024 was a testament to the resilience and innovation of the AV industry. With new products, enhanced technologies, and invaluable networking opportunities, it’s clear that we’re moving forward with renewed vigor and excitement.
